At Aspect Group Services, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We continuously look for ways to reduce our environmental impact while improving efficiency. It is more than just an aspiration for us to achieve NET ZERO that drives our daily initiatives—it is a driving force behind our long-term vision. The benefits and efficiencies of commercial rooftop solar panels in optimising energy usage for businesses are a key part of this vision.
This commitment can be seen in one of our most recent projects at our Norfolk head office.
We undertook a comprehensive commercial solar installation, combined with electric vehicle (EV) chargers, aimed at reducing our energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This system will reduce our carbon footprint and generate long-term financial benefits. Commercial solar panel installations offer potential cost savings, energy independence, and a positive environmental impact.
Solar Installation Overview
For maximum energy savings and sustainability, we installed 41 Longi HiMo5 405W All Black Mono solar panels. Despite being limited in space, these monocrystalline modules are among the most efficient on the market and can produce significant amounts of energy. Approximately 14,198 kWh will be generated by our solar installation each year, reducing our reliance on the grid in the process. Commercial solar panel systems come with financial implications and practical considerations that businesses must evaluate.
A Huawei SUN2000 15KTL-M2 3-phase inverter is paired with our solar panels, efficiently converting DC energy produced by the solar panels into AC power for our operations. By combining these technologies, the system will deliver optimal performance for years to come while contributing significantly towards our NET ZERO goal. The advantages and requirements of commercial solar panels for businesses are clear, offering both financial and environmental benefits.
EV Charger Installation
We have installed two Zappi electric vehicle chargers in addition to our solar panels. With smart functionalities like 3G/4G SIM connectivity and the ability to prioritise solar power when available, Zappi is known for its innovative approach to electric vehicle charging. Both staff and visitors will benefit from fast, efficient AC charging with these chargers.
With smart charging, we can reduce our reliance on external energy sources and optimise the use of energy generated on-site. By integrating solar power with electric vehicle charging, we are making significant strides toward reducing carbon emissions, not just in our operations but also in our employees’ and visitors’ transportation.
Financial Benefits and Return on Investment
Solar panels and EV chargers offer significant long-term financial benefits. We anticipate savings of £75,253.68 over the lifetime of the system. The reduction in energy bills alone makes the investment worthwhile, but additional revenue from government schemes such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) enhances the financial outlook further. An overview of commercial solar panel costs shows that factors like roof size and energy consumption influence these costs.
Any surplus electricity that is sent back to the grid will be rewarded under the SEG. Government initiatives are being used to encourage the use of renewable energy, and some suppliers are offering 15p per kWh for electricity exported. With an estimated rate of return of 18.3%, the system can deliver a return on investment in as little as six years by making the most of the energy we generate, whether for internal use or export. The energy output that commercial solar panels generate depends on factors like system efficiency and location.
Support from Government Grants
EV Charger Grants from the OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) have also helped offset the installation costs of our Zappi chargers. A grant of up to £350 per charger is available for both workplace and residential installations, making it an attractive option for businesses considering EV infrastructure integration. When commercial solar panels are installed, businesses must consider the financial aspects and potential tax relief.
We encourage other businesses looking to install EV chargers to take advantage of this funding before it ends on 31st March 2025 since the grant programme only runs until 31st March 2025. Our services include guidance on navigating the grant application process so that the transition is as seamless as possible. Assessing various factors for a commercial solar PV installation, such as roof space and structural integrity, is crucial.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability
The new solar and electric vehicle charging system has more than just financial benefits; it also has a significant environmental impact. By reducing our reliance on non-renewable energy sources, we are reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to the UK’s broader carbon reduction goal. Commercial solar PV systems can be installed with minimal disruption to business operations, often without requiring site shutdowns.
This project demonstrates that solar energy can be integrated with modern EV infrastructure to create a more sustainable business model. It also illustrates that making these changes can be economically viable, with both immediate and long-term savings. The reduction in electricity bills due to the installation of commercial solar panels is a significant financial benefit.
The Future
We’re committed to achieving NET ZERO by investing in sustainable technologies that benefit our business as well as the environment, which is why we’ve installed solar panels and EV chargers at our Norfolk office. Businesses must understand the requirements and processes involved in installing commercial solar panels.
Our experience with this project highlights the potential for other businesses to make similar investments and reap the benefits of cleaner energy, reduced operating costs, and government assistance. Solar power and electric vehicle charging can play an important role in companies’ sustainability plans, whether it is through the Smart Export Guarantee or the OZEV grant. The logistics and requirements involved in installing solar panels are crucial for a smooth transition.
